Instructor 師傅 (Sifu)
Sifu Jason VanWinkle started studying martial arts at the age of 7 doing Kenju Karate. His love for martial arts grew from there, and at the age of 11 started studying Kenpo Karate with with Dr. John La Tourette, in the AIKKA, where he received his 2nd degree black belt. By 1990 he had won his place in the top 50 Kenpo fighters in the United States.
During a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, Sifu VanWinkle came across a teacher that was teaching Bak Pai Sil Lum Kung Fu, Sifu Steve Baugh of the Lohan School of Shaolin. Sifu VanWinkle started his Kung Fu training from Sifu Baugh as a garage student. After a several years of Bak Pai Sil Lum Kung Fu, he took on a teaching role to the youth that lived in his local neighborhood, and then shortly thereafter, opened a school of his own in Southern Oregon. Shaolin Northwest.
Sifu VanWinkle has continued his Bak Pai Sil Lum, Bak Sil Lum Lohan, Fu Style Bagua and Sun Style Hsing – I training with Master Robert Louie of the Jing Mo Physical Culture Association in the Bay Area of California. By this time he also opened a school in Portland, Oregon.
Currently Sifu VanWinkle is also studying with Master Steve Salek the style of Choy Lee Fut in Minneapolis, Mn.
He has also continued his training of Southern Lion Dance from Yogi Tam of the Los Angeles, California area. Also from Master Steve Salek (Sifu VanWinkle’s cousin) of the Green Dragon Kung Fu Association in Minneapolis, Mn.
Sifu VanWinkle made himself a winner in Martial Arts and many Tournaments in the 80’s and early 90’s. But as time has gone on, his philosophy has changed from being a winner to helping his students become winners in the art of self perfection. Sifu VanWinkle says “It’s not at all about me, or what I’ve done. It’s about the students that I have taught, and all they have grown and accomplished.”
“The mind is the quickest and it must transmit its intent to the Ch’i. When the mind is clear of its intent (not confused), then the Ch’i has direction on where to flow. Without direction, the Ch’i will flow to anywhere it wants. When the Ch’i is focused in one direction, then one’s strength emerges.”
